When it comes to superfoods, everyone wants in. The market is exploding with superfood green drink manufacturers and that’s been wonderfully advantageous for the consumer. It is easier now than it has ever been to get your daily fix of superfoods. And that’s made achieving our health goals a whole lot simpler.
Long gone are the days of trekking through the Amazon river valley, risking life and limb, to pick some berries. Honestly, those days never really existed for most of us, but I’m sure you get my point. (Honestly, I’d just go without a berry smoothie if it meant me potentially losing my leg to a crocodile or being bitten by some absurdly dangerous scorpion thingy).

This is old fashioned gardening at play. That’s right, you can grow your own superfoods without being a Himalayan farmer. You can be one with the earth. You can wear those cool gloves and one of those big sun hats. So let’s take a look at a handful that you could easily grow yourself.
Dandelion greens: Dandelion greens are a legit superfood. They are in the top of their class when it comes to health benefits. They are loaded with beta-carotene, vitamins A, K, C and even potassium. Oh, they are loaded in calcium as well. Often times, dandelions are growing naturally in yards across America. They are practically begging the residents of homes to make tea out of them. You can also buy the seeds yourself to get started.
Kale: Kale is every millennial’s dream food. There are now kale chips and kale shakes and probably kale sunglasses. Kale is a powerful green superfood that’s health benefits are hardly rivaled. This cruciferous vegetable can be grown easily by just obtaining some kale seeds. Growing your own kale would make you a hipster god, no doubt about it. And it would also make you super healthy, so long as you eat it after you’ve grown it!
Strawberries: Strawberries are super high in flavonoids. These can be grown in those pretty baskets that hang on your porch, or in a traditional garden set up. Strawberries are a perfect desert superfood that is ripe with all types of amazing health benefits.
Garlic: Garlic is one of the most anti-inflammatory foods you will ever find. They are perfect to add to all types of cooking explorations. I love to place them on top of my meats while I cook them. I also love to use them in my saute’ dishes. Garlic is best grown in fall weather. You’ll need to buy the cloves which are meant for growing it. In other words, don’t just buy garlic at the store and shove it in the ground. You weren’t going to do that, I know…..
Blueberries: Did you know that blueberries are naturally grown in the United States? Yes, a red-blooded American superfood. Blueberries are one of the most antioxidant dense foods on earth, bar none. And phytonutrients called flavonoids are their main claim to health fame. You can purchase blueberry shrubs at your local nursery relatively easy. You can eat blueberries straight up, or, what I like to do is add them as the sweetening part to my morning superfood smoothie.
Now, why would anyone be so inclined to grow their own superfoods when there are so many shake options available at low cost? Well, most of us wouldn’t. But some of us enjoy hobbies that make us feel one with the earth. You can also know 100% what you’re eating since you managed its growth yourself. The downside is, you might not have the right superfoods in your kitchen all year round so most likely you’d need to supplement in some fashion.
But whatever you do, whether it means growing your own superfoods or buying them in powder form, make sure you get yourself a daily dose. It can do wonders for your health.
