For anyone who has ever experienced a migraine you know you would do anything to get rid of the pain. Even before the headache begins, you notice symptoms such as dizziness, ringing in your ears, seeing zigzag lines, and being sensetive to light. I’ve had many different remedies thrown at me to try and stop a migraine. “Drink soda… Drink caffeine… Go for a run…Try anti-seizure medication.” Although some people may have experienced relief from those suggestions I personally have not. I was sitting in my doctors office the other day begging him to do something about my migraines and he asked me what I normally take for them. I said, “Nothing”. I usually go to sleep with a pillow over my head and hope no one turns the light on. If I can help it I would rather not have to take asprin 5-7 days a week either. So here is what my doctor suggested I try.

  • Go run a bath with water as hot as you can stand it. Submerge your feet in the water.
  • Get an ice pack and hold it on the back side of your neck near the base of your head.
  • Relax your feet in the water for as long as needed.

If you don’t want to move from your spot on the couch you can always wrap a heating pad around your feet and use the icepack on the back of your neck. I have found either way works. This migraine treatment has been extremely helpful and saves me from having to buy aspirin and migraine drug prescriptions every month. The reason this treatment works is because the warm water on your extremities pulls the blood away from the head relieving some or all of the migraine.

Another useful tip while soaking your feet in hot water is to perform acupressure to the head, face, and neck.

  • Press the brow line under the eyes
  • Rub the temples and jaw in a circular motion
  • Massage the base of the skull with a tennis ball.

There are numerous reasons why people get migraines. Could be diet, hormones, chemical imbalances in the brain, or even a change in the barometric pressure. Some treatments may work better for some people depending on what their trigger is.

Next time you have a migraine I hope these suggestions work for you. If you are already taking an anti-seizure medication for your migraines or any other supplements speak with your doctor first before you stop taking your medicine.
