The food industry puts heavy budget on advertising to mislead and deceive people into thinking their products are healthy and these foods are all popular grocery store staples. Some of these food items might contain little nutritional value, some might contain harmful chemicals, and some even pose as “healthy” when they’re completely bad for your health.
So, whether you want to lose some weight or want stay healthy, you need to know the foods that are unhealthy for you.
1. “Low-Fat” Foods
The grocery store shelves have been filled with the conventional products marked as “low-fat” that has not only been recognized to be unworkable, but many research show that it can be totally harmful for your health. These low-fat food products are stuffed with trans-fats which are damaging for our hearts and cholesterol levels. Many high sugar junk foods flooded in the market advocates consumption of foods now known to cause harm.
The food manufacturers have been fooling people by labeling their products “low fat” even though it is loaded with sugar, because sugar is not a fat.
2. Vegetable oil
Many people take in vegetable oils as hale and hearty because they have the word “vegetable” in them. However, many studies have now confirmed that these vegetable oils can cause serious harm to your health. The composition of the full of fat acids can lead us to physiological changes within our bodies and causing to numerous diseases.
Vegetable oils like canola, corn, grape seed, etc. are injected with many harmful chemicals to improve color and odor. This elaborate procedure converts the vegetable oil into a wobbly fat called polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) that our body doesn’t digest well. The high ratio of Omega-6 PUFA to Omega-3 in these vegetable oils can increase risk of heart disease, fatness, and diabetes.
Aside from vegetable oils, margarine is one of the most misunderstood and over-recommended foods in the health community because people buy it as the healthy alternative to fatty, damaging butter. In reality, margarine is stuffed with hydrogenated oils (trans-fats) which are notorious to cause cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, and many other dangerous maladies.
4. Cold Drinks
To lose weight, soda is the first thing that doctors recommend you exclude from your diet. Regular and diet sodas can cause kidney damage, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and diabetes, and it can also increase risk of stroke.
Sports drinks are claimed to be the ultimate thirst quenchers and even better than water but they lack evidence for their claims. A study from the University of Oxford found that there is a prominent lack of evidence to support the claims related to enhanced performance or recovery, including drinks. A quick glance at the nutrition facts also discloses a lot of sugar and calories along with their electrolytes.
5. Fruit Juices
Fruit juice is perceived as healthy because it is natural and has the word “fruit” in it. While fruit juices have some vitamins, but many people fail to realize that it has too many calories and sugar. In fact, these fruit juice contain just as much sugar and calories as a sugary soft drink and even the “all-natural” juices available in the market may contain high-fructose corn syrup and flavors. For example, one 8 ounce of grape juice has about 170 calories, 40 grams of sugar, and 42 grams of carbs. (That’s more than a 12-ounce can of Coke.)
Many yogurts available in the markets, with a low-fat and fat-free yogurts tags, have high-fructose corn syrup, sugar, and thickener. Some yogurts have a similar amount of sugar as found in a candy bar, along with other artificial sweeteners, which might spike your insulin. Try to avoid the fruit yogurts because the fruit inside these yogurts is either saturated with sugar or from concentrate. Instead, buy plain yogurt and fresh fruit in it.
7. Frozen Dinners
Just because of the convenience, frozen dinners have become a mainstay at the grocery store. While some frozen dinners are exceptionally high in calories and sodium. Some the unhealthiest frozen meals in the market have 960 calories and an unlimited amount of sodium.
So, before buying any healthy product go beyond the labels and scrutinize the ingredients to stay clear and stay healthy.
