There are millions of people around the world that rely on some form of caffeine or taurine to begin their day and stay energized. Fatigue expert Jacob Teitelbaum, MD, says: “we have an energy crisis of historic proportions going on. We are reaching for anything that will give us energy—and we’re over-relying on coffee now more than ever.” Although caffeine gives us a great boost, it will also leave us feeling drained and fatigued as we come down. So, what are some reliable, drug-free, natural energy boosters you can use right now?

 1. Get some fresh air

The only thing better than breathing in general is breathing in fresh air. A deep breath of air will reduce any stress you may be feeling and wake you up by supplying more oxygen to your brain and body.

2. Chew some gum

Andy Smith, PhD says: “chewing gum increases heart rate, which increases blood flow to the brain. It also stimulates the autonomic nervous system, which can increase alertness.” Dr. Teitelbaum suggests you choose a mint-flavored pack: “mint stimulates your nerve fibers,” he says. “it’s kind of like splashing cold water on your face.”

3.Have a snack

Snacks that are low in carbohydrates, such as fruit, are fantastic natural energy boosters. Try to get some vitamins packed into this snack, particularly vitamins C and D, selenium, riboflavin, niacin and frolic acid. However, you may want to stay clear of bread and dairy, which can make you feel sluggish.

4. Learn something new

“The more actively you can engage your brain, the more alerting an activity is going to be,” says fatigue management specialist and former NASA researcher John Caldwell. “You can actually overcome a good bit of sleep pressure just by engaging in something interesting.”

5. Listen to music

Not just any kind of music, mind you: upbeat music. A study conducted in 2008 by Sam Houston State University found that tapping your toes to music will significantly improve your alertness.

6. Rub ears

Pulling on your earlobes may seem like a strange thing to do, but because your lobes are filled with ’acupressure meridians’, also known as energy pathways, it will help you stay alert. “Massaging the ear unites all of the meridians, and gets the energy flowing,” says Dr. Teitelbaum. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it!

7. Roll back and forth on your toes

Yes, it’s another slightly strange physical tactic but it’s been proven that rolling on your toes will stimulate your circulatory system! And you know what they say; the easier oxygen and glucose can be transported around your body the better.

8. Laugh

Laughter has absolutely loads of benefits, one of which being the release of endorphin’s! These babies will have you energized and ready for anything in no time.

9. Write

You can write anything: a schedule, a task list, something you’re looking forward to. The action will give you an energy boost.

10. Get some cold water

The best way to use water as an energy boost is simply splashing water into your face, but this may not always be appropriate, especially if you’re at work. Instead, place some cold water on your wrists pulse areas. Or, you know, drink it!

11. Exercise

At least 30 minutes of exercise in the morning can be the difference between a naturally productive day, and a day spent consuming coffee like lifeblood. However, if you need your energy boost right now a few jumping jacks will get you back on track. Getting your heart rate up even for a little while will leave you energized for hours.

12. Stretch

Get up! Reach your fingertips as far away from your torso as possible, twist your torso and your hips, then if you can touch your toes. Move your muscles and get your blood pumping: instant energy boost!

13. Nap

Finally! An excuse to nap during the day! Just one fifteen-minute catnap can keep you refreshed without interfering with your sleep cycle.

14. Avoid energy-suckers

You know who I’m talking about! Maybe they want to come and tell you about how bad their day is or they need your opinion on about five thousand different things. Although it may be a bit insensitive to avoid them, a few hours during your day should be free of these energy suckers!
