1. Practice Heartfelt Gratitude
You cannot be grateful and unhappy, no more than you can unhappy and grateful. The daily practice of putting yourself in a state of gratitude will help increase your levels of happiness.
In the morning when you wake up, and before you go to sleep at night. Think about all the things you are grateful for in your life. If you can maintain this habit of being grateful for what you currently have, you will find your happiness and life change as a result.
2. Choose Experience Over Materials
What will you remember and appreciate more in your life: A two-hundred dollar jacket you bought five years ago, or the weekend trip you spent away with a loved one, ten years ago?
Studies show that spending money on experiences instead of materials will have a long-term effect on happiness levels.
3. Spend Time Outdoors Every Week
Due to our busy lives, most of us only ever see the sight of a computer screen, and the four walls around us. Very rare do we spend enough time outdoors to appreciate the nature close to home.
Wherever you live in the world, if you can make time and spend it outdoors, this can have a very positive effect on your life and happiness levels.
A simple walk alone without any distractions – iPods and phones – is all you need. You can also share this past-time with someone close to you, who is also interested in doing the same.
4. Cut Down On Your Coffee Intake And Drink More Herbal Teas
Most of us love coffee all throughout the day. Drinking coffee at the best of times can be relaxing. However, due to the caffeine in coffee, it has shown to increase stress and make us irritable.
Many of us are unaware on how much we rely on coffee. If we were to cut coffee out completely, we’d likely experience headaches and an emotional low.
Instead, enjoy your morning coffee, but also try and include natural teas. This one change alone can help reduce stress and improve your emotions, making you feel more happy.
5. Keep A Journal
Studies show that writing about your problems is more effective than talking to somebody about them. Keeping a journal can have a long-term effect on levels of happiness.
If ever you feel angry, or happy. It’s beneficial to take time aside and express how you feel through your journal.
